Role: Lead UI/UX Designer
OpenVoice
I led the design of OpenVoice, an open-source platform for collecting speech data. I focused on creating a user-friendly experience and developed a comprehensive design system to guide the development process, ensuring consistency and efficiency
Duration: 4 Months
Project Goal
To design a user-friendly and engaging platform that encourages community participation in collecting high-quality speech data for African languages, ultimately bridging the language gap and supporting the development of inclusive AI models.
However, the challenge lay in conceptualizing a novel and intuitive platform for a complex process (language data collection) with limited existing precedents.
Deliverables
To bring OpenVoice to life, I crafted a comprehensive set of deliverables, including user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes. I also developed a robust design system with over 300 components, incorporating React Native icons, to ensure seamless collaboration with engineering and guiding the development process.

User Research & Analysis
I analyzed and conducted thorough research on competitor platforms including audio platforms, text editors and LLMs to identify best practices and areas for improvement.
Stakeholder Interviews
To ensure the OpenVoice platform aligned with business objectives, I conducted thorough stakeholder interviews to understand their goals and priorities. This collaborative process informed feature prioritization and guided the design direction, ensuring the platform effectively addressed key business needs.
User Flows
I meticulously crafted user flows, mapping out the entire user journey, to ensure a seamless experience. These user flows, refined through stakeholder feedback, guided design decisions and ultimately resulted in an intuitive platform
Design System
I developed a robust and scalable design system, incorporating React Native libraries, to ensure consistency and streamline development. This system, with its defined color palettes, typography, and reusable components, served as a shared language between design and engineering.
User-Interface Design
Crafting an intuitive user experience was paramount. I designed the homepage with clear call to actions to encourage participation.
I streamlined the script creation flow, minimizing friction at every step.
Furthermore, I meticulously iterated on the recording and transcription interfaces, ensuring accessibility and a smooth experience for users with varying technical skills

Key Improvements
Homepage
Replaced the carousel with a stack of animated cards for better information presentation.
Added more informative copy and a clear call to action "Create Script".
Removed the "Review" button from the homepage to simplify the user experience.
Script Creation Flow
Auto-generated script titles to streamline the submission process.
Removed the submission confirmation page, simplifying the user experience.
Added a "Next" button on the submission success page to facilitate the submission of multiple recordings/transcriptions.
Gamification
Integrated gamification elements throughout the platform, including voice coins, user progress tracking, a 5-star rating review system, and a leaderboard to incentivize user participation and foster a sense of community.

Results
User-friendly platform: Designed a user-friendly and intuitive platform that encourages community participation and simplifies the process of contributing speech data.
Efficient development: The comprehensive design system streamlined the development process, ensuring consistency and accelerating development timelines.
Successful platform launch: The OpenVoice platform is currently in development, laying the foundation for a valuable resource for the African AI community.
